.cx is the country code top-level domain (TLD) for Christmas Island. It is administered by CIIA (Christmas Island Internet Administration), a community-owned non-profit company which also provides Internet service to the island's residents.

The TLD was formerly administered by Planet Three Limited, a company with offices in the United Kingdom and Australia, which went bankrupt and ceased operations, voluntarily transferring management to CIIA (called Dot CX Limited at the time). The local (shire) government of Christmas Island endorsed the transfer, but the Commonwealth of Australia (which has international authority over Christmas Island as an external territory) did not immediately approve it. Australia has since published a Memorandum of Understanding which recognises CIIA as the legitimate manager of .cx.

Acceptable usage requirements

On its website www.nic.cx, it has a lengthy list of acceptable usage requirements that are more strict than the .com, such as on January 14, 2004, the domain goatse.cx was suspended by Christmas Island Internet Administration for AUP violations in response to a complaint and it was terminated not for being a shock site which it had existed in such manner since at least 1999,[1][2] but later in 2004 when it linked to dolphinsex.org, which was disallowed by .cx's usage policy because the site advocates zoophilia.[3][4]
