- Ulysses Redux, a Latin play by William Gager, is staged by the students of Christ Church, Oxford on February 5. Two days later, on February 7, the students revive Gager's 1583 Latin play Rivales (now lost). Rivales is performed again on September 26, with Queen Elizabeth in the audience, during her second visit to the university.
- Isaac Casaubon publishes his edition of Theophrastus's Characteres, setting him on a career as an editor.
- From June through the remainder of the year, the London theatres are almost continuously closed due to an epidemic of bubonic plague. The closure will continue through 1593 and into 1594.
