Antinous was a former constellation south of Aquila. According to a tale, an oracle told emperorHadrian that only death of his most beloved person would save him from a great danger. It is said that Antinous, a beautiful youth loved by Hadrian, saved the emperor by drowning in the Nile. For his memory Hadrian created the constellation in 132. In modern times, Antinous was variously considered an asterism within Aquila, or a separate constellation, until the International Astronomical Union formalized the constellations in 1930, when Antinous was discarded.
