Aquarius is the eleventh astrological sign in the Zodiac, originating from the constellation Aquarius. In western astrology, the sign is no longer aligned with the constellation as a result of the precession of the equinoxes. In astrology, Aquarius is considered a "masculine", positive (extrovert) sign. It is also considered an air sign and is one of four fixed signs.[9] Aquarius has been traditionally ruled by the planet Saturn, and, since its discovery, [[planets in astrology#] Uranus has been considered a modern ruler of this sign. Being the eleventh sign of the zodiac, Aquarius is associated with the astrological 11th house.

Individuals born when the Sun was in this sign are considered Aquarius individuals. Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun is in Aquarius roughly from January 20 to February 18.[1] Under the sidereal zodiac, it is currently there roughly from February 13 to March 14.[2][3]

Origins

The corresponding month in the Babylonian calendar is Arax Šabaṭu, "the destroying month", also called arax arrat zunne, "month of the curse of rains", associated with the Great Flood. It is dedicated to Ramman, the storm god. The zodiacal sign of this month was called GU = Assyrian , the name of a dry-measure. This was associated with Hebrew kad, "pitcher, jar", presumably in reference to the urn of Aquarius. The name Aquarius of this sign is of occidental origin, while Babylonian astrology symbolizes it with a simple amphora, in reference to the apsû (diluvial) region of the sky.[10]

The astrological symbol for Aquarius is said to represent waves or ripples of water.

Astrologers broadly agree the following traits are associated with Aquarius. Note that no scientific research thus far has been able to prove such correlation, leading the scientific community to consider astrology as a pseudoscience or superstition[11][12] more than a science. On the other hand, many astrologers consider planetary aspects to hold a more pervasive influence than sign location, thus conceding many exceptions.

One type of Aquarius person can be shy, gentle, patient and more sensitive.[13] The other type is more enthusiastic and exhibitionist.[13]

They despise lies and hypocrisy, and although rarely caught in a lie, may nevertheless subtly and cleverly manipulate what they say to give a wrong impression.[15]

Physical traits

Many astrologers believe that each sign of the zodiac has identifiable physical traits. Individuals born under the sign of Aquarius tend to have a vague expression, a high forehead, finely chiseled features, the face is usually long and oval with flat planes, and there is a look of nobility suggestive of the classic Greek or Roman models, often likened to Greek or Roman Gods or Goddessess like Zeus or Aphrodite. They are above average height and have a slender figure. Their eyes are usually light coloured that convey remoteness and have a dreamy quality. Aquarians also have average noses and lips that are full at the center and thin out toward the edges. [18]

Compatibilities

Aquarius is widely thought to be compatible with same element signs - Libra,[19] Gemini[19] and Aquarius itself.[19] It is often considered to have a great potential with Sagittarius granted they do not overreact to things, as both are given to whims and can be quite temperamental.[20][21][22] Aquarius can also learn a lot and build a solid, enduring bond with Taurus however both will have to make an effort from time to time to understand each other's different world-view and take into consideration each other's special needs.[23]

There are many variables that determine compatibility in astrology, such as birth dates, birth months, birth years, position of a sign within the Sun, the Moon, Stars, etc. The signs listed as compatible with Aquarius do not reflect an individual profile or individual reading as interpreted within astrology, but rather reflect a general guideline and reference to compatibility as dictated by variables such as Qualities and Elements within the Zodiac.[24] Professional astrologers rarely boil compatibility down to just the sun-sign. The branch in astrology dealing with interpersonal compatibilities is called Synastry.[25]
