Bridge is a ward of the City of London and is named from its propinquity to London Bridge[1]. Bridge ward is found within the boundary formed by the river Thames, Swan Lane, Arthur Street, Fish Street Hill, Gracechurch Street, Fenchurch Street, Rood Lane, Lovat Lane and Lower Thames Street.
The ward contains Monument tube station, Fishmongers Hall and St Magnus-the-Martyr church, no longer as Betjeman observed in 1972[2] surrounded by the smell of fish[3]. There is a monument to the Great Fire of London and the whole of London Bridge is incorporated into the ward[4].
Politics
Bridge is one of 25 wards in the City of London, each electing an Alderman, to the Court of Aldermen and Commoners (the City equivalent of a Councillor) to the Court of Common Council of the City of London Corporation. Only electors who are Freeman of the City of London are eligible to stand.
