Croydon North (UK Parliament constituency)
|
Croydon North is a parliamentary constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, covering the north west of the London Borough of Croydon. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. The current Member of Parliament is Malcolm Wicks of the Labour Party, who has one of the largest Labour majorities in London, despite being the first ever Labour MP for the area.
The seat was created at the 1997 general election from the former Croydon North West and part of the former Croydon North-East constituencies. There had previously been a Croydon North constituency from 1918 until 1955.
Boundaries
This electorate includes Thornton Heath, Norbury, West Croydon, Selhurst and parts of South and Upper Norwood.
Croydon's three constituencies are contiguous with the boundaries of the London Borough of Croydon. The constituency borders the seats of Carshalton and Wallington, Mitcham and Morden, Streatham, Dulwich and West Norwood and Beckenham, as well as Croydon Central and Croydon South.
Boundary review
Following their review of parliamentary representation in South London, the Boundary Commission have made minor changes to the existing Croydon constituencies. In the modified North division, the electoral wards used in the formation are:
- Bensham Manor, Broad Green, Norbury, Selhurst, South Norwood, Thornton Heath, Upper Norwood, and West Thornton.
If the boundary changes had been in existence at the 2005 general election, it would have had the largest electorate after Isle of Wight in England at 86,178. In the boundary changes, it receives over 2,500 electors from Croydon Central.
