Personal life

Morrissey, the youngest of four children, was born in Knotty Ash,[1] Liverpool, England. He was raised by his mother, who worked at the Littlewoods catalogue company, after his father, a shoe repairman and key cutter, died when David was fourteen.[2][3]

Morrissey's wife is the novelist Esther Freud (great-granddaughter of Sigmund Freud and daughter of Lucian Freud), and they have three children.

Career

He made his television debut in 1983, after training with Everyman's Youth Theatre in Liverpool, and went on to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). At the 2004 BAFTA awards, Morrissey was nominated for Best Television Actor for his performance in the drama serial, State of Play. In the same year, the play The Deal, in which he co-starred as Gordon Brown opposite Michael Sheen's Tony Blair, won the award for Best Single Drama.

In 2008 he will star in the UK premiere of Neil LaBute's In a Dark Dark House at the Almeida Theatre[4], and will also appear in the 2008 Christmas special of Doctor Who as seen in the trailer at the end of Series 4 episode "Journey's End". After the week-long speculation stemming from the events of The Stolen Earth in June 2008, Morrisey was the favourite of various bookies to be revealed as the successor to David Tennant in the role of the Eleventh Doctor.[5].

Morrissey has also directed for TV and film. The Pool, his debut screenplay which he also directs, is in post-production.
