David Wilshire (born 16 September 1943, Bristol) is a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom.
He is Member of Parliament for Spelthorne in Surrey, and was first elected in the 1987 general election. He is currently a Conservative whip in the House of Commons.
Early life
He was educated at Kingswood School, Bath and Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge where he received an MA in Geography in 1965. He was on Avon County Council from 1977-81.
Parliamentary career
In 1987 he introduced Section 28 as an amendment to the Local Government Bill. The amendment made it illegal for local authorities to "promote homosexuality or ... promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality". [1] The ban was eventually reversed by Parliament in 2003.
In 2008 he was the subject of a parliamentary enquiry after it emerged he raised thousands of pounds for his local party by hosting constituents on visits to the House of Commons.[2]
