Dr. Joseph "Jake" Martin Jr. is a fictional character on the long-running American daytime drama All My Children. Since the character's on-screen birth in 1979, he has been portrayed by several actors, most recently Ricky Paull Goldin, who took over the role on April 30, 2008.
Storyline
Jake, originally known as Joey, was the late-in-life son born to Dr. Joe Martin and his second wife, Ruth, a nurse. He grew up a good kid and as a young adult, fell in love with Emily Ann Sago, the daughter of reformed prostitute Estelle Sago. Although the two married against Joe's and Ruth's wishes, their love wasn't meant to last. When Emily Ann discovered that sadistic pimp Billy Clyde Tuggle was actually her birth father, she became mentally unhinged. After trying to help her the best he could, Joey divorced her after she was institutionalized. Soon after, Joey left for medical school in 1991.
Joey returned to Pine Valley in 1996, now known as Jake. Having dropped out of medical school, he became a handyman. He married Gillian Andrassy in 2000 and the two were divorced in 2001. Gillian miscarried their baby in February 2001. For a time, Jake was believed to be the father of Liza Colby Chandler's daughter, Colby Chandler, though this was proven untrue. Jake became involved with Greenlee Smythe, and Mia Saunders, and had started up his medical career again before leaving Pine Valley in 2003. In August 2007, he called his nephew, Jamie Martin, for help in Africa with AIDS patients.
2008 return
Months later, Jake Martin was being held hostage in Darfur and Zach Slater sent Aidan Devane to bring Jake back. Once out of harm's way, they returned safely to Pine Valley. Although Jake expressed plans to return to Sudan, big brother Tad convinced him to stay. Jake began working at the hospital with Joe, and reconnected with Angie Hubbard. He also renewed a bond with Dr. Frankie Hubbard, who considers him his mentor, and in whom he sees the little brother he never had.
Romances
Jake has begun a physical fling with Amanda Dillon. She is slowly falling for him while he is falling in love with ex-Iraq soldier Taylor Thompson.
