John Smith (Chancellor of the Exchequer)
John Smith (1655/6 – 1723) was an English politician, twice serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Smith's father was also called John Smith and he had a sister called Anne Smith, Lady Dashwood. He was educated St John's College, Oxford, was at the Middle Temple and was an MP from 1678. He married Anne, daughter of Sir Thomas Strickland, and had two daughters, Mary Smith and Anne Smith, Lady Grant. Smith was first appointed as Chancellor on June 2, 1699 until March 27, 1701. He served as Speaker of the House of Commons from 1705 until serving again as Chancellor from April 22, 1708 until August 11, 1710. He was a moderate Whig.
