London Rowing Club (LRC) is one of the oldest rowing clubs on the River Thames in London, England.

It was founded in 1856 for the purpose of winning medals at Henley Royal Regatta, is one of the seven founding clubs of the Remenham Club at Henley [1] and is one of only five clubs which retain the right to appoint representatives directly to the Council of the Amateur Rowing Association. [2]

It is regarded as one of the most exclusive and successful rowing clubs in Great Britain [3] and its Patron is HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. [4]

Most recently 'London' (as it is known in rowing circles) won the Thames Cup in 2006 and also provided half of the oarsmen in the composite international lightweight crews that won the Club Quads in 2007 and Double Sculls in 2005. London is a High Performance Centre for Lightweight Rowing and has been the base for many successful international Lightweights since the inception of the weight class. Two of its members, James Lindsay-Fynn and James Clarke, competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as part of the Lightweight Men's Coxless Fours.

LRC has a substantial boathouse (altered and extended in 2008) located by Putney Bridge. Membership is only given after a full committee vote. [5]

Former members of the club include the British racing driver, two-time Formula One World Champion and only driver to win the Triple Crown of Motorsport, Graham Hill. From 1952 to 1954, Hill rowed in twenty finals with London, usually as stroke of the crew, eight of which resulted in wins. He also stroked the London eight in the highly prestigious Grand Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. He used the colours of the club as his motor racing helmet design, as did his Formula One World Champion racing driver son, Damon. [6]
