Mayors of New York City

The Mayor of New York City is the chief executive of the government of New York City, as stipulated by the Charter of the City of New York.

This list through 1897 includes the mayors of (roughly) what is now considered Manhattan and portions of The Bronx only. The five boroughs were consolidated in 1898. See History of New York City.

The 108th and current Mayor of New York City is Michael Bloomberg, twice elected as a Republican and now an independent.

Notes

  • Until 1821, mayors were appointed by state. From 1821 to 1834, the Common Council appointed the mayor. In 1834, Cornelius Lawrence became the first popularly-elected mayor of New York City.
  • Mayors were elected to one-year terms from 1834 to 1849. From 1850 to Consolidation in 1898, they served two-year terms. Because of the impending shift with Consolidation to odd-year elections in 1897, no election was held in 1896, so William L. Strong served as Mayor for an extra year.
