Morning Joe is a weekday morning talk show on MSNBC, hosted by Joe Scarborough with co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Willie Geist. CNBC anchor Erin Burnett, MSNBC.com columnist Courtney Hazlett and Weather Plus meteorologist Jackie Meretsky make regular appearances on the program. It is the replacement for Imus in the Morning, which was cancelled in April 2007 after simulcasting on MSNBC since 1996.
The program is set out in a panel format, with Scarborough discussing the news of the day with three panelists.
History
Originally begun as a filler for Don Imus's old slot, Morning Joe was not originally begun with much enthusiasm. Former Florida Congressman Joe Scarborough had suggested the idea of a morning show when Imus in the Morning was abruptly canceled.[1] While Morning Joe has become quite popular -- after only a year it had the same average number of viewers as Imus in the Morning -- it still falls behind Fox New's Fox & Friends and CNN's American Morning.
Paris Hilton Incident
After about a month of being on the air Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski became a Youtube sensation. Brzezinski gained notoriety for refusing to read the report of Hilton's release from prison as it was the lead headline. She felt Hilton's jail sentence was being reported too much and decided to protest by first attempting to burn the script. After co-host Willie Geist prevented her from doing this she resorted to putting it in a paper shredder. All of this took place live and has since garnered over three million and a half views. [2]
