Paul Gordon Clark (born 29 April 1957) is a British Labour politician and MP for the South East constituency of Gillingham. Clark is currently a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Transport.
Early life
Clark was born in Gillingham where he was educated at Featherby Infants and Junior Schools and Gillingham Grammar School. He then studied for a BA Economics and Politics at Keele University in 1980 before completing a Diploma in Management Studies at the University of Derby in 1997.
From 1986 until 1997, he managed the TUC National Education Centre in North London.
Politics
He first won the seat in the 1997 general election, and had previously been involved with the AEEU and the TUC. He was a Gillingham Borough Councillor from 1982 until 1990, Labour Deputy Group Leader from 1983 until 1989 and Labour Group Leader from 1989 until 1990. In the most recent General election, Mr. Clark was returned with a very small majority of just 254 votes[1].
He is the Labour Member of Parliament for Gillingham and Rainham. In his time in Parliament he has been Assistant Government Whip, HM Treasury, from the 13 June 2003 to the 11 May 2005 and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the former Deputy Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon John Prescott MP, from the 10 November 2005 to the 27 June 2007. In Gordon Brown's new government, he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to Ed Balls, MP, the new Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families. In October 2008 he was promoted to be a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Transport.
Mr. Clark has an average of 75% attendance in divisions[2] since 1997 and has rebelled just 7 times[3] against the Labour Government.
Personal life
He married Julie Hendrick in 1980 in Chatham. They have a son (born June 1993) and daughter (born May 1990).
He should not be confused with Paul John Clark who stood as the Labour candidate in Rayleigh, Essex in 2001. He is also a writer for television.
