Ross Chandler was a fictional character on the ABC soap opera All My Children he was portrayed by actor Robert Gentry from 1985 until 1990. Ross and his cousin J.R. Chandler are the only two All My Children characters to have one parent from the Cooney-Cortlandt family, and another from the Chandler family.
Character history
Ross Chandler is a significant character from the canvas of All My Children, for it is his birth that led the feud between two of Pine Valley's wealthiest men, Palmer Cortlandt and Adam Chandler.
The Cooneys and Chandlers were two working-class families in Pigeon Hollow, West Virginia. Pete Cooney had a whirlwind romance with Charlotte Chandler, who was called "Lottie" by her brothers, identical twins Adam and Stuart Chandler. The relationship resulted in an out-of-wedlock pregnancy, but Pete left Pigeon Hollow to serve in the military during World War II. He had no idea that Lottie was pregnant, and was not present when she gave birth to a son, Ross. A despondent Lottie later committed suicide. Ross was then raised by his uncle Adam. Extremely bitter after Lottie's death, Adam raised Ross to hate Pete Cooney, who eventually changed his name to Palmer Cortlandt. Despite the apprehension between the two when they met decades later in Pine Valley, Pennsylvania, Palmer and Ross became close and developed a relationship, albeit strained.
Ross married Ellen Sheppard, but Ellen was more preoccupied with her ex-husband, Mark Dalton, who was addicted to cocaine, but while Ross and Ellen were married they adopted a teenage Julie Rand. Ross was jealous of the time Ellen spent with her ex and he developed an eye for his father's nurse, Natalie Marlowe and they began an affair. Ellen eventually learned of Ross's infidelity and divorced him and moved out. In the mean time Natalie rejected Ross, and accepted Palmers's marriage proposal. Angry that he was spurned by Natalie, he barged into her room and raped her, his daughter Julie heard Natalie's screams and thus Ross was convicted. Ross was sent to prison, but there he realized what he had done and repented and mended fences with his loved ones, when he was let out of jail he left Pine Valley and hasn't returned since.
